Weird Laws in Singapore

11:54 PM by mr. simplicity · 19 comments

Beside being know as a "FINE" city, Singapore also have some weird laws.

1) It is against the law and a public caning offense to not flush the toilet after using it. Special police randomly check on public restrooms.

2) It is illegal to perform oral sex unless it is part of foreplay leading to full sex.

3) Anyone not flushing a public toilet may receive a large fine.

4) A person convicted of littering three times, will have to clean the streets on Sundays wearing a sign saying "I am a litter lout."

5) Relieving yourself in an elevator is particularly forbidden

6) No hugging without permission, you can be charged for outraging modesty. Jail or fine.

7) No mooning pranks ie not drop down your pants. Its call insulting modesty. Fine. Nick Leeson was charged for that.

8) No grass. Its call drug consumption. Long jail.

9) No writing removable marking ink on someone else car. Its called vandalism. Cane. Ask Micheal Faye.

10) No sports or bar brawl. Its called Affray. One week jail.

11) No pocketknife in public places. Cane for locals. Deportation for foreigners. One Japanese fought his way out in court.

12) No expletives especially at women. Its called insulting her modesty. One architect got fine or jail. I can't remember which punishment he got.

13) No mention of the word 'bomb'. Whether in humor or anything. The bomb squad, goon squads will be all over you. One mother got it at the airport. Got interrogated for hours. Missed her flight of course.

14) No poking adverse comments at religion. You can be cited for sedition. Very serious matter. Ask one blogger. Or the Danish film producer.

15) No guns of any kind. Even electronic starter 'gun'. All guns are illegal in Singapore. Call them anything else or surrender it to the arms and explosive department.

16) No firecrackers. I think it is jail/cane/fine.

17) Only local ciggies allowed. 2 charges. One for illegal smuggling. Sentence further upsized for evading sales tax.

18) No pranks such as pulling another pants down. 2 charges. One for molest, the other for usining criminal force.

19) No utterance, 'I kill you' or waving a chopper even if you happen to be in the kitchen chopping veggies. Its called criminal intimidation. Lady jailed after losing appeal.

20) Don't introduce any stranger as your good friend and speak well of him. Its called abetment if he happens to be crook. Jail.

21) No fancy gifts like Playboy magazines. its called possession of pornographic materials. Fine on per item basis. The boys can go Geylang or the 4 floors of whores by themselves.

22) Do not call yourself a 'Hollywood movie' producer when everyone with half a brain knows you aren't. Its called impersonation. An extra charge to upsize your original offense..

23) Do not login on to someone unsecured wireless broadband. Its called hacking. Fine/Jail.

24) Homosexual sex is illegal

25) No illegal gatherings after 10pm. It will be considered as an illegal gathering if it consist of more than 2 people. Police officers will question you and your gang.

*Note: Some are meant as a joke. Do not take it seriously.

  3. Not true about the gun laws - it is encouraged to shoot crows anywhere in the city, but only if you are a member of a gun club, afaik.

  5. Hi, Singaporean here.. just to clarify some mistakes here :)

    1) It is against the law and a public caning offense to not flush the toilet after using it. Special police randomly check on public restrooms.

    3) Anyone not flushing a public toilet may receive a large fine.

it's not a caning offense. Caning offenses usually involves some form of causing injury to others. Not sure about the special police tho. So far I've not heard of any cases of anyone that was actually fined.

    5) Relieving yourself in an elevator is particularly forbidden

You mean it's allowed in other countries? haha

    13) No mention of the word 'bomb'. Whether in humor or anything. The bomb squad, goon squads will be all over you. One mother got it at the airport. Got interrogated for hours. Missed her flight of course.

only happens in more fragile situations. Among friends, it's ok. Not as bad as you think.

It is illegal to gather in a groups of four or more. Not two.

As for 5) the peeing in the elevator, there's a law against it because it happened so much, especially in Housing Board flats. Yeah, we're filthy people.

  9. It is my civic responsibility, plus my plain boredom to comment on this.
    1) It is a fine, no canning involve unless your crap are used to vandalize the walls.
    2) This is been changed. Apparently, it was a British legacy. No one just bother to change it.
    3) Yeah.
    4) Yeah.
    5) They have urine detector in elevators and will stop it when it detects some, trapping the person who pee-ed.
    6) No true. This is our neighbor, Malaysia.
    7) Nick Leeson was charged for washing tons of cash down the drain, and bringing down a bank.
    8) More than jail, procession can be termed trafficking and that is death penalty.
    9) Micheal Faye vandalize the wrong people’s (read ‘elites’) stuff.
    10) Probably true.
    11) Maybe.
    12) Yeah.
    13) Yeah.
    14) Yeah.
    15) Firing a gun, even with no intention to kill is mandatory death sentence. Carrying an unauthorize gun is mandatory life sentence. There is no parole in here.
    16) Yeah.
    17) Yeah.
    18) Yeah.
    19) Yeah.
    20) Don’t know.
    21) Yeah.
    22) Yeah.
    23) Yeah. Fine if you are the commoners, the ‘elites’ gets off with a warning.
    24) Homosexual sex is now legal, just as long you don’t do it when people cane see you. Even if it is in the comfort of your home.
    25) Yeah.

And yes, most of them are correct anyway.

  10. In the USA, any anal intercourse (sodomy) is considered illegal. Many countries have laws that they don't enforce.

Isn't there a no chewing gum law in Singapore?

BTW, I've heard that Singapore is a great and very clean city. Ladies say the shopping there is incredible.

  11. 23) Yeah, riding on another's broadband attracts a fine. Not surprisingly, the telcos are profiting from selling phone broadband plans. Many, cafes and shopping malls and MRT stations have free unsecured broadband.

    24) Yes, like malaysia we have a ridiculous and evil law against homosexual sex between men. No, you can be caught in your own home too. Yes, lesbians have no law against them.
It's called Section 377a, intercourse against the order of nature. It was used to entrap many gay men. We tried to repeal it in 2008 but it failed.
