David Cook wins American Idol in record 97.5 million vote

This year's American Idol finale has ended in an unexpected landslide for David Cook, a former bartender from Blue Springs, Missouri.



The decision stunned even judge Simon Cowell as the 25-year-old claimed victory in the competition over a 17-year-old prodigy and expected victor, David Archuleta. Cowell had chalked Archuleta up as the likely winner the night before, leaving egg on his face as he apologised to Cook for writing his chances off early.

“I didn’t really know if the apology was warranted,” Cook later told reporters backstage. “I thought what he said was an opinion and nothing more. At no point did I feel disrespected. Yeah, I’m appreciative of the fact that he decided to apologise. An apology from Simon is a pretty rare gem.”

A record 97.5 million viewers voted on the competition. Host Ryan Seacrest said Cook had won by a margin of 12 million votes over Archuleta, who had enjoyed the most praise throughout the season.

Manchester United Wins Double

They have done it! Manchester United clinched the trophy in the Champions League Final in Moscow after beaten Chelsea in the Final. Double win for them and Congratulations! This is their third European title.

Manchester United beat Chelsea, 6-5, in a rain-soaked penalty shootout in Moscow to win the European Champions League title Wednesday night following a 1-1 tie.

In the first final between two English teams, Edwin van der Sar batted away Nicolas Anelka's drive on the 14th kick to give Manchester United its third Champions League title. It came in the 50th anniversary year of the plane crash that killed eight United players in Munich, Germany.

Cristiano Ronaldo had scored in the 26th minute for Manchester United, his 42nd goal of the season. Frank Lampard tied it for Chelsea in the 45th.
