Teen music sensation Rebecca Black and her internet hit Friday are actually a viral marketing campaign for a new movie, it has been revealed.

A press statement from Universal Studios says Rebecca Black is a character from the family movie The Music Factory, due for release on April 29.

Little-known 15-year-old actress Jessica Jones, who has portrayed Black in the Friday music video and in several television appearances, stars in the film.

The Music Factory, directed by Home Alone's Chris Columbus, is about a secret facility where cyborgs resembling young teenagers are created and turned into pop stars.

The film also features R&B star Usher as a shady record producer.

The Rebecca Black song Friday became a huge hit over the last month, garnering over 92 million hits on YouTube.

The sheer absurdity of the lyrics and video have inspired a host of parodies, a swarm of criticism and even death threats against the fictitious Black.

Some observers have suggested the song is a joke, but few could have imagined it was a viral marketing campaign.

More information will be revealed in the first official trailer, to be released next week.
